We wish to thank, and give credit, to the following:
In compiling this information we find we had assistance from many people. In putting together family information we wish to thank Arlene Brogan for much family imput; Catherine Wells and Barbara (Budge) Griffin; Mr. Ed Evans for his interview with Lincoln and Eric; Lincoln DeBunce and Erick Jones for their historical archaeological study, maps and graphs.
For the family genealogy we also searched many records.
We have given each individual a number to match as close as possible the plat map. Following the families and their information you will find an appendix giving each number in reference to the plat map.
Ruby and Lida

Griffin Creek cemetery is located on a knoll above Griffin Creek Road. It has much in common with many other small rural cemeteries of southern Oregon with no one actually keeping a record. A few elaborate headstones and perhaps family plots, many basic markers, and also wooden and metal markers with the information weathered away, are examples of such consistencies. To sit down on the outskirts one cannot help but notice various patterns emerging within the cemetery. Shapes of headstones, longevity of life over increasing years and individual stature in community, to name a few, were things we first discussed and saw as possible patterns to explore for in more detail. Our initial attraction to Griffin Creek cemetery was its apparent remoteness as indicated by an inventory of Jackson county cemeteries on County Form #81 731 028. A description of its location on the form proved to be outdated for certain roads have been slightly altered. The main marker is a sign reading Burrell Road on Griffin Creek Road approximately one and seven tenths (1 7/10) miles from West Griffin Creek Road; follow the road up letting yourself through the gate below the Evans' property sign. The cemetery is at the end of the road (it would be courteous to give Mr. Ed Evans a call to let him know your intent on visiting the cemetery. You have to cross his property to get to the cemetery).
Our realization after spending some time mapping the area is that it is basically in a state of decay. Weatherization and also vandalism is occurring at a more rapid rate than any preservaton or restoration that is undertaken by the county of descendants and friends of the buried. This fact made it all the more obvious of the vital need for studies, archaeological in nature, designed at recording cemeteries in parallel situations like that of Griffin Creek. Also studies to locate more family information.
The importance of historical Archaeology in studying cemeteries became manifested by the works of Deetz and Dethlefson in their work in "Death's Head, Cherub, Urn and Willow." They accurately demonstrated changes through time (dates on headstones provide exact time chronology) of cultural patterns by comparing designs of headstones in late 18th century and early 19th century New England cemeteries. This established a premise for further work in this area.
We tried several avenues to find historical information such as maps and burial records on Griffin Creek cemetery. Unfortunately we were not able to come up with any maps so we have created a rough plat of the area (fig. 1). The plat proved to be of immeasurable value in terms of speed and efficiency because we assigned each grave a number then made and recorded our observations for each grave. The plat also makes it easier to identify possible patterns occuring in burial geography. We (Ruby & Lida) researched many records of the individuals buried in the cemetery.
After formation of a map showing marked and unmarked graves and in conjunction with the list of burials we were able to accurately depict and display various cultural patterns, over the period 1850 1989, via seriation and bar graphs. Although our data is accurate, it must be viewed with caution concerning any conclusions about patterns. This is because of the limited quantity of data as a result of working in a small cemetery. At best our interpretatons can be considered well developed inferences. However, our study could eventually become more substantiated if similar research is conducted on the same type of rural cemeteries within the cultural region.
One of the most obvious things one notices in a cemetery is the various types of lithic grave markers. Our decision was to divide the stones into two categories based on morphology: upright and flat (upright meaning the height is greater than the width or the depth, flat meaning the height is less than the width or depth). The graph in figure 2 indicates a seriation and battleship curve for the upright headstones. In the decade 1920 we see a peak of five stones made in the upright position and then a tailoring off during the depression years with no one having an upright stone made after the 1950's. In contrast we see similar seriation for the flat stone but occurring at a much later point in time. The peak for the flat stone occurs during the 1970's and a decline in the eighties. The later decline is most likely due to the fact that the cemetery is being used less and less as a burial site. The replacement of the upright stones by the flat stones is possibly due to several factors. From an efficiency perspective, the upright stones generally have more mass than the flat stones, they also are predominately made out of polished granite or marble. These facts indicate greater investment of energy than is needed for manufacture of flat stones. Possible scenarios for this increased efficiency include: 1> possibly the cemetery became less desirable as a place to bury "upstanding citizens", 2> the cost of producing beautiful hand crafted stones became immense when compared with the growing factory type economy, 3> the reverence towards others decreased as kinship networks decreased, 4> due to an increase of vandalism in the last couple of decades a flat stone would be far less vulnerable (Ed Evans, whose property lies adjacent to the cemetery, reported to us in an oral interview that kids broke into the cemetery about twenty years ago and caused considerable damage to the headstones), or 5> a combination of the above.
To further investigate patterns in style we looked at the material used in construction. Marble by far was the most common of consistent lithic material. It ranged from the very first stone in 1859 to a stone in the 1980's with a fairly consistent distribution in this range. If we were to graph its seriation using a scale of every two decades as opposed to every one it would indicate a more obvious battleship shape curve. With the exception of one unmarked stone in the decade 1900 we see no material other than marble until the 1920's and beyond. In the decade 1920 we see the appearance of concrete with a bronze plaque, which peaks during the 1940's and then slowly tapers off. It is interesting to note that its appearance, peak and disappearance coincides well with war times. The third material is the polished granites: red and grey. The grey granite appears also in the 1920's and the red much later in the '50's. If we combine them on the seriation graph we see a peak in popularity in the '50's and '60's, a time when no concrete and bronze are found.
We chose to look at designs carved into the stone (a design inherent in the shape such as a cross would be counted as such). The first design to appear is the urn in 1859, which is also the first to disappear completely (by 1930) from the design motif. In gradual overlap the urn is completely replaced by the leaf and the flower designs. The leaf seems to be slightly older than the flower design with a peak in popularity in the 1920's. The flower peaks in the 1950's and given time might replace the leaf completely as a common design. The tree design does not seem to follow any particular seriation pattern, although we noted that it occurred most frequently in conjunction with polished red granite stones. Further investigation might discern a particular carver associated with this sub assemblage. The cross design makes its appearance in the 1930's and gradually increases in popularity. More data is needed to generate accurate seriations regarding this symbol in particular and the other three in general.
An attempt was made to analyze status. Figure 3 shows the kinship relations between families. Interestingly, the most impressive stones are held by the Griffin and Wilson families (see figures 4 & 5). This coincides with high average life spans for these families compared to the Durham and Meadows families who have less impressive stones, plus the Davis family who's graves are unmarked (see figure 6).
Also regarding status, several place names are associated with the Griffin family. Griffin Creek and the cemetery are worthy examples. The Redpath family is an example of a case where a divorce in the kinship pattern is reflected, not in geographical distance, but in marker types. The Redpath's are unmarked thus probably reflecting a lower status.
A general pattern was found when comparing grave marker types and average life spans. Of 51 marked graves the average life span is 64 years. The bulk of which are found on lithic markers. In contrast, genealogical information on unmarked graves revealed an average life span of 21.75 years (a 42.25 year difference). This seems to suggest that age and status are linked with grave marker types (see figures 7 & 8).
Headstones do slowly deteriorate over time and in the cemeteries of Jackson county, where care and maintenance is infrequent, the need to record their weathered historys is perhaps most urgent. Only two out of 22 wooden grave markers had any readable letters left on them at the Griffin Creek cemetery. The archeaologist's task becomes more difficult with each passing day. There certainly is a need for historical archaeology and a look at past life ways. So many things stand to be gained, to be learned of our distant and not so distant heritage. Patterns of mortality and life expectancy, communitiy stature and periods of poverty and prosperity are to name but a few. The Griffin Creek study only just begins to breach the spate of idle lore.
We came to the conclusion that the reason there are so many marble foot stones, with no headstones, is due to the amount of vandilism occuring in the cemetery. Some one (or ones) had to be hunting something to do to attack a cemetery so far off the beaten path.
