John Robison Diary 1851-1853 Linn County, Iowa

1850 – 1853 Diary

by John Robison (1799 – 1870)

The well-worn diary was donated to Talent Historical Society by Ken & Betty Barger in 2000. When it was donated the author was unknown. After reading and studying the diary it became clear that John Robison penned his daily activities while he was in Linn County Iowa. John was married in Ohio to Susan Milligan and came to Iowa in the 1830s when it was called the Black Hawk purchase. They first lived in Lee County, and later came to Linn County and established a farm there. John was the son of Joseph Robison who also lived in Linn County, and Susan was the daughter of Hugh Milligan from Ohio. Their children were as follows:
Eleanor b. Feb 1825 in OH married Ben Stephens died 11 Jan 1859 OR
Isaac Cowen b. Apr 1827 OH married Mary J. Daugherty died 1890s OR
Rebecca b. Jun 1829 OH md Gideon B. Davidson d. Nov 1883 OR
Hugh Milligan b 1832 OH unknown whereabouts
Joseph T. b 1834 OH md Mary G. Barneburg d Sep 1904 OR
Samuel McMillin b. 1837 IN md Hannah Barneburg d. 16 Oct 1911 OR
Susan Jane b 1839 IA d. 1842 IA
John F. b. 1842 IA d. 22 Oct 1864 OR
Robert Boyd b. Aug 1845 IA md Ersula I. Goddard d. Nov 1880 OR
Henry S. b 1845 IA d. Jan 1850 IA

In the spring of 1853, John & Susan crossed the plains, settling in the Rogue River Valley, in a place called Wagner Creek (now Talent) in Jackson County, Oregon. Neighbors of the Robisons in Oregon, Welborn Beeson and W. J. Dean, both kept diaries that mention the Robisons over and over again. Their life in Oregon is well documented. Hugh Milligan Robison or “Mig” as he is mentioned went with his brother, Isaac, seeking California gold but remained in California while Isaac went back to Iowa to get his bride and return to Oregon. A few letters were exchanged but nothing is revealed about Hugh’s whereabouts. He is the only one who does not come to Oregon with the family in 1853 [except of course Henry and Susan who both died in Iowa before the trek]. When the diary was being transcribed, I went overboard on the footnotes. This version scales down some of the research. But if you are interested in knowing more about the other people mentioned, there is a file at THS the supplements the diary.

Pages were not numbered by the author but by me; he listed the days of the week are as follows; Sunday = Cu, Monday =Mo, Tuesday = Tu, Wednesday = We, Thursday = Th, Friday = Fr, & Saturday = Sa; halled or holled = hauled; metin = meeting; childer= children; B = bushels; Win = Wind; backer = tobacco; Mig = his son, Milligan; oc = o’clock; litening= lightening; cobich or cabich= cabbage etc. etc. None of the proper names are capitalized nor is there much punctuation so I have taken the liberty to do that]
Some of the names refer to cows or other animals such as Sis on the opening page.
